Hi all. I would like to find out about using sunblocks please. Am I to apply it all over my body or just on the face? Cheers.

mamadee if you are in a hot climate like me, which I believe Nigeria is, then sun avoidance and religiously applying sunblock have to become second nature. Anywhere that is exposed needs to be protected. People advocate big sun hats and umbrellas as well as covering up with long sleeves. I have read that the sun can even penetrate clothing so some people wear block under their clothes too. I try and avoid going out in the day as much as I can as people tend to strip off rather than cover up,where I live, which would make me stand out too much

Thanks for the advice. I really try to wear long sleeve more often but now will start coating my body with sunscreen. Laughing . Although I am hardly under the sun, it amazes me the way I turn dark after a while of using any lightening cream. guess my melanin production is high.

mamadee also make sure you get a block with a high percentage of zinc as they offer the best protection and do not breakdown so easily like chemical ones. Also regular re-appliction after a while may be needed. Best thing is to avoid the sun as much as you can as a lot of lighteners make the skin more sensitive to the sun. I always walk in the shade and avoid going out at certain times of the day when I know the sun is strongest.

they even have suncreens that go as high as 110 SPF. they tend to cost more but offer a higher % of protection. I am currently using coppertone sport waterprooof in 50SPF

I read that there is not that much difference between a product with an SPF of 30 and one with SPF 100. For me my Burnout has been great and it only has an SPF of 32 if I remember rightly. Sorry I don't have it to hand.

Correct ,it is more important to make sure you have a physical block with a high percentage of zinc as it breaks down less in the sun and offers better protection

I have learnt so much since coming here. Sunblock never really factored into my daily routine and yet my skin had been crying out for it with all the damage I have built up ove the years in this hot sun. Here, Black people don't think it is necessary because they believe you are already protected and white people are looking for a bronzed look

Although it is getting better I feel like it is a bit like that over here. Not everyone sees the importance of protection. I know I would not feel comfortble whipping out my sunblock and applying it in public because you are made to feel that it is not needed if you are black.

@ Kim, I kid you not but if I started applying my block I am sure someone would take a video and upload it on youtube because I would be sticking out like a sore thumb lol

@ mamadee physical sunscreens containing zinc or titanium are preferable to the chemicals but it appears at the moment that zinc based ones are preferred out of the two of them. I think it has been mentioned that the titanium can break down and release free radicals which can increase the aging effect process. It can also be irritating to some people. I am using Burnout Clear and the one that is for sensitive skin which have high percentages of zinc in them, but there are lots of other options. I would say finish what you have now and start looking for one with a high percentage of zinc in it and of course avoid the sun as muh as you can

Did you read the info about the titanium, Might be an idea try and avoid it if you can. Yes titanium is better than using chemical blocks but if you can avoid it by using a physical block with just zinc, it would be preferable according to the research at the moment.

quiamontana & Kim thanks for the info about titanium. I did not realise that. Sometimes it seems that you have to check things every day to keep up with current info study

Yes rainbow it can be fustrating when they seem to change their minds about something .Fortunately the burnout I am using now does not have titanium but I would not have been happy if it had and I was being told that it was no good. I have seen lots of sunblocks that have both ingredients in it.
