I had warm beige skin, but I lived in hot climate for a
while and didn't protect my skin from the sun well. It's more of a caramel now.
I would like to get my skin back to its original color because there is no way
I'm getting all new makeup and stuff. Plus, my culture values a lighter
complexion (please don't take offense to that)

what some great ways to lighten skin naturally?

Any product suggestions that you have tried and have worked?

Thanks.

I agree. Lactic acid peels weekly at 30-40% strength will help exfoliate skin and remove the tanned skin. Also, use a quality sunblock with an spf 55 or higher always. You can also carry an umbrella during sunlight time or where a hat that can offer you added shade.

I agree that a series of peels should help to remove some of the sun damage you have sustained and equally, protecting the new skin with a good sunblock and avoiding sun exposure as much as possible should be the way forward. Also adding a good vitamin C serum will help brighten your skin and improve it's condition.

Speaking of vitamin C serum, once I reach my desired shade...possibly around early fall..I plan to add a vitamin c serum to my regimen eventually. To help avoid any potential pale colouring and have more of a glow.

During the lightening process, Some people experience a paleness, almost washed out look. I have seen this myself with a product that is no longer available and whilst I saw lightening, the look made me appear slightly anaemic as opposed to having a glow that I wold have preferred.

vitamin C serum can really help to bring a glow to the skin that may be missing whilst lightening.

I agree. Not that I'll get a paleness complexion, but what I see may be viewed differently to others since we tend to look at ourselves more often in the mirror. So, I would rather be safe and be for certain I still will maintain my skin's glow as I'm in the process of lightening to a much fairer shade.

GG,

you know that is so true. Often it is only when we see a photo or someone makes a comment that we realise that we may be looking a little pale. I remember my doctor saying I did not look like myself. I was secretly laughing to myself.....thinking, if only you knew. She actually proceeded to pull down my eyelid to see if I appeared anaemic.

In the past, I have also seen photos where I looked almost as pale as my friend who is white, but in reality there was a definite difference in our colours. Maybe it was the undertone coming out in the pic. I definitely looked pale and needed some warming up !!

Not all of us are blessed with glowing complexion. Constant
exposure to sun will cause the skin to darken and appear weather-beaten. Here
are a few home remedies to lighten skin tone and bring the glow back on your
skin. Wash face with cool water and run an ice cube over the face. Mix a
teaspoon of sugar with a few drops of lemon juice and apply to face. Rub it on
gently. Leave it on for 10 minutes and wash it off with Luke warm water. Mix a
teaspoon of oatmeal powder, a pinch of turmeric and a few drops of lemon to
make a thick paste. Apply to face and leave it to dry. Wash off mask with
water. These remedies can be followed daily. A good weekly ritual to get an
instant glow and lighten skin tone is to mash ripe bananas and smear it on the
face. Wash it off after 3-4 minutes, a face pack made of fullers' earth, mashed
ripe papaya and cucumber juice when applied to the face and throat will help
tighten skin and lighten it in the process, Apply slices of raw potato to the
face. Let the juice sit for 10 minutes, then wash off with cool water. Apply
milk or natural yoghurt to the face with a cloth. Leave on for 5-15 minutes or
until dry. Drink at least a litre and a half of water, especially in the heat.

Welcome Smookedtrout, I saw your name and...it made me a bit hungry.

More often these days I hear how glowing and clear my skin is (mostly due to exfoliation and products that help fade, brighten, and lighten). Though, I recall actually having a couple of my friends about 4-5 years ago telling me how "bad" my skin looked [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] ..lol, and I never liked the idea of covering it with foundation on a regular basis since I have acne-prone/sensitive skin. So, I knew I had to do something with it. I know that if I stopped everything, eventually my skin would revert back to it's old state.

Hey guys, its been long, hope all of you are doing well.. Tell me, can I use a vitamin c serum when using the ret-a/MQ mixture? Or should I just use HQ with the mixture for lighter and more radiant skin?

PorcelainSkin, was wondering how you have been doing.

I would use the vitamin C in the morning underneath your sunblock. Apply the Vit C, wait for about 20 - 30 minutes and then apply your sun protection, making sure you apply your sun protection 30 minutes before going outside. Remember that RA is not really recommended for the day time, as the skin becomes more sensitive to the sun when used in this way. HQ as well, can also be a problem if you are not conscience to being extra careful in the sun

I myself have used HQ in the daytime, but always ensure that on top of my sun protection, that I avoid the sun at all costs.

Maharani, I am doing well; just been so busy. Thank you for the information. I finally found the retin-a at a pharmacy although not the mequinol so I'll have to order it online. They have two types, they have the retin- a gel which is 0.01% and the retin-a cream is 0.05%. Which is better? If I use the ret/mq and wash with the likas and use vitamin c (and sunscreen of course), will I be able to lighten by three shades? Or do I have to add some HQ to it too? And then perhaps just use the lactic acid on the body?

I know what you mean about being busy !!!

Just wanted to clarify the percentage you gave. In general it starts off at the lowest at 0.025 going up to 0.1 %. The 0.1% is really only for people who have been using retinoids for a while and have built up a tolerance to it. It is not recommended to be used straight off. I personally started at 0.025 % but some people are also fine at the 0.05%. The gel is usually the best to use as it penetrates more readily and is also preferable for oilier skin types. If you cannot get the Retin A gel at the lower percentage then I would think about also getting this on line.

Please also remember that once you get it, that you have to let your skin adjust to this powerful product. Initially it is best if you use it every few nights or couple of nights and then once you are used to it, this can be gradually increased to nightly usage. If necessary you can aslo buffer the Retin A, either by aplying a gentle moisturiser before, with or after the Retin A. This just helps to weaken the effect of it.

I don't know if you saw a recent post of mine, but I personally believe that there has not been enough people using the MQ as a lightener for me to give any sort of judgement on how it will work. Actually with any lightener, no one can predict how it is going to work on the individual. From what I have read, it appears that the process is a slow one and any kind of initial lightening may be the result of the exfoliation of sundamaged or hyper pigmented areas. I used other products before I used the MQ for a very short period. But like I said, no one can predict how many shades you will achieve and only time will tell.

Maharani, thank you so much for the information. If I use the 0.01% gel every 3rd thing for instance, it will be okay right? Or start off twice a week and build it from there? What I would like to know is will using the ret-a/mq alone lighten once skin by how many shades? Or would you recommend I use HQ aswell? Or vitamin c serum?

Porcelainskin,

First of all, Please check that the gel you are purchasing is 0.01% and not 0.1% . Like I said the 0.1% is generally for people who have used retinoids before or have tough old skin like yes_I mean no......sorry yes_I mean no, I am sure you are baby soft really !!!

If it is the 0.1% I would not recommend it. You really need to start off at the lower percentages like 0.05% or 0.025% and then work your way up if necessary . For example I believe GG has been using 0.05 % for a while now but has not had the need to increase it at the moment and it is working perfectly for her. Now if you are looking for Retin A at this range, you can obtain it very easily at All day chemist if necessary but you can check on line in your neck of the woods as well.

I have read that some people are considering incorporating HQ into a MQ/RA regime, but again this is unkown territory and doing this means that you are testing out something new. If you are comfortable with using HQ, then personally I would try this regime out first and see how it works out and then think about trying the MQ later, if necessary. More is known about how HQ works as a general lightener than MQ.

The gel is definitely 0.01%, no worries. So could I perhaps wash my face with likas, then apply the retin a plus a HQ? And perhaps get the lactic acid for the body only and not for the face?

PorcelainSkin,

Okay as long as it is. You can use the likas to wash with but please just lather and then rinse off....don't let it sit on your skin. Then dry your skin gently and allow for at least 20 minutes before applyng your mix. This allows for your skin to return to it's normal PH and also means that the retin A is not driven in too quickly, thus avoiding causing any skin irritation. You can mix the RA and Hq in your hand remembering that only a pea sized amount of RA is needed for an area like the face and neck. As I mentioned before, please do give your skin a little while to adjust to the Retin A. Though you appear to have a relatively weaker strength, you still need to see how your skin reacts, so try it every few nights initially. Whilst you are seeing how this goes, the HQ on it's own should be fine. And remember Retin A is for night time use only.

If you do intend on carrying out the peels on your body, then you must stop using the retin A, a few days before and after the peels, otherwise you risk over-exfoliating and potentially causing hyperpigmentation.
