VERY VERY VERY INTERSTING ONDINE! I SAT ATTENTIVELY THROUGH OUT THE ENTIRE THING!

There are sooo many reasons why fair skin is disired not only in india but in many other parts of the world appart from asia, south America, America as well, africa, the UK....The list goes on and on! from colonialism to ancient mythology, the idealistic perception and cognition of skin color where pop culture is concerned was not born out of thin air!

I enjoyed everything that was said...and this entwines with everything we discuss here on this forum, everything we are about and our reasons for doing what we do! I love what Dr. Anjali Monteiro said! "Everyone is supose to package themselves to look desirable, smell desirable, to conform to idea's of beauty and success, and I think this is a very important way in which power is excersised over all of us!"

the model Anjhula Singh Bais also made that comment about children's minds and thier peceptions of them selves at such a young age and how damaging this though can be to someone who is dark skinned...

Dr. Anjali Monteiro spoke about debate and educating people...she went on to say that banning bleaching creams are not the answer. but this is my thing, is it going to change????? thats my question....wether it was colonialism or the perception of Deities having fair skin which made them more pure or supreme, and the thought of possesing fair skinned makes one closer to a higher power or whatever it maybe or its the supuriotiy complex from colonialism - how does one fight centries or even milleniums of belief???

we use the term "its only skin deep" implying that its not a big deal IT IS A BIG DEAL!!! ITS THE BIGGEST DEAL OF THEM ALL! in certian parts of the world having a certain skin tone can mean the differnce between living and dieing!

I also noted the statement that banning lightening products is not the answer and I totally agree. It would just allow for a whole host of possibly dangerous products to fill the gap with absolutely no regulation. It is bad enough as it is with products like Bio Claire etc now, so who knows what sort of junk would turn up !!!

This is why I get so angry that the Uk decided to ban HQ. I will be totally honest and say that I personally would prefer not to use HQ but in terms of what some of the alternatives are I still believe that HQ has it's place as a lightening option. Bio Claire jumped up when the ban was imposed and started offering something that was supposedly "HQ free". People were over the moon that there was something they could use and that did lighten. ............And then came the distressing feedback of stretchmarks, dark marks, spots, skin blackening etc etc. People had no idea that they had been applying powerful steroids and just fell for the " HQ" fee moto.

I did get excited that the director said that he would always cast actors based on their talent rather than their skin colour, as I think that this could be an option in promoting all skin colours. Seeing more darker skinned tones is essential in confirming that dark can be JUST as beautiful as any other skin tone and should not be put down or cast aside, BUT then he spoiled it by saying that they would use a lighter make up on that individual.....so what is the point.????? I understand he has to cater to what he has been asked to do, but then somehow you have to re educate and take a stand.

Only today Eggo mini posted an article that stated that 2 dark skinned cheerleaders were baned from taking part in the indian cricket 20/twenty games because they were considered too dark and might offend !!! OMG I could not believe that this is what I am reading in this day and age. Whatever happened to talent ? No-one is asking you to go out with or to marry these girls, so why the h*ll are you afraid ????? Do you think their darker colour will somehow rub off and jump onto you ??? And the supid people don't realise that by only accepting the white girls in the performance they are putting themselves down too !!! stupid stupid stupid !!!

Oh and to finish, I nearly took my tissues out for the poor actor who could only get "romantic" parts due to his pallor. The grittier and NEGATIVE roles went to the darker folk !!!! Boo hoo hooo !!!

Very sad video and sadly makes me never want to visit India, even though this is where my partner originates from. Life can be hard enough without someone thinking you are beneath them .

Oh and just another thing before I go......Those people who hold the white people in the UK in such high self estem, with their light coluring, should come here in the summer where you can't move in the park for the majority of them frying themselves till they get the darkest possible tone. Maybe they need to get with it and see that pale is out at the moment !!!! LOL

I agree a very sad video. I know we may be here lightening but in my case I am doing it beacuse I believe it suits my features not because it will make me superior to the darker person next to me or make my life somehow better. These people have taken this to a whole other range and at epidermic proportions. I doubt that I am in the majority when it comes to someone wanting to lighten their skin in the UK.

This is very sad and it pains me to think that people actually feel this way in today's world. It reminds you of just how ignorant people can be at times

Did anyone note the flagrant hypocrisy in the video? ALL the hand-wringing 'accept yourself as you are' critics were ALL fair-skinned! Any dark Indian watching this would only be reinforced in their belief that one needs to be fair in order to succeed in India. Even the so-called 'dusky' model was much fairer than the avg Indian when you see crowds of people.

As to whether it will change, it IS changing: we're discussing it, documentaries are being made & women's groups are railing. This dynamic used to be accepted as gospel. It is now being questioned. When the 3rd world has progressed economically to where they no longer have such an unequal system with masses of impoverished people, a few middle class ones & a handful of rich (fair) elites this will lessen. Another factor is that being light is becoming less 'exclusive'. Any dark person with some know-how & a few bucks can lighten their skin & be fair too. Once anyone can get something, it loses its exclusivity.

Thanks for the link to the UK article. What a disgrace! That cheerleader is stunning! A real beauty. I was hoping that her mates would support her & refuse to perform. That has happened elsewhere in discrimination cases. In N.S. an allegedly gay teen wore a pink shirt to school & got insanely bullied. The other students made a statement by ALL wearing pink shirts. I've seen this type of support in racism cases too. I hope the cheerleaders sue the Bejezus out of the organizers & flatten them economically!

I am also shocked about the cheerleader incident. If someone believes that those that are lighter are somehow better it is one thing but to to say you don't want anyone of a dark complexion in your view just sounds like something from the dark ages, excuse the pun. Totally ignorant and yes I hope that they get sued big time and hopefully learn something from it

It places skin lightening/bleaching in India into a more informed context. In that part of the world, the entire trajectory of a girl's life can be altered by a few shades of colour.

I GUESS THIER SKIN TONES DID HELP THEM ADVANCE IN LIFE JUDGING BY THE JOBS AND TITLES THEY ALL HOLD....

AS A MATTER OF FACT...THE ACTOR AS WELL...PRETTY MUCH EVERYONE WHO SPOKE INCLUDING THAT WOMAN WHO IS ABOUT TO GO TO SCHOOL IN THE UK WAS LIGHT SKINNED!!! OMG...I CANT BELEIVE I DIDN'T NOTICE THAT!

WOW....NOT ONE DARK SKINNED PERSON WITH A SIGNIFICANT PEACE...."ACCEPT YOUR SELF" THEY SAY..IF THEY WERE A FEW SHADES DARKER THEY'D BE BUYING CREAMS, HIDING INDOORS, AND APPLYING SUNBLOCK JUST LIKE THE REST OF US!

OH MY GOD!

Yeah the only dark skinned individual was the lady in the slum who was having to test God knows what on her skin before using it on her clients. It is hard to think that even in their poverty they were willing to spend whatever they could in the pursuit of fitting in and making a "better" life. I am so glad I was born where I did.

Whenever I come across such awful situations like this , I am eternally grateful that I too live where I do. I do believe that for the most part, the tone of your skin is not the main focus as to whether you can achieve here. And I have never felt that the colour of my skin was any sort of barrier. I have worked hard, been instilled with good manners and consider myself as someone who is nice to be around and hence the world in which I have worked has always had open doors to go as far as I want to go.

me too! to an extent this is all true...but think hard...there must have been some social situation or an awkward moment where your race or skin color has cause you to be marginalized or looked at in a negative manner...especially where you live...

or am I wrong?

Maybe I have been lucky but I honestly cannot recall a situation where I have felt awkward or treated in a negative manner. And I have travelled to many places in the UK, where a black face is not regularly seen. I have always felt welcomed and very comfortable. Maybe being a female makes me less of a threat....I don't know.

It is in for some, but honestly if you came to the area of London I live in, "pasty" complexions are not desired. As soon as the sun comes out, all the clothes come off too. People are trying to suck up as much colour as they can, be it through the sun or from a bottle. They are happy and willing to sit in a dog poo infested park, if needs be. You only have to look at the amount, that as soon as the school holidays arrive, head off for areas like Spain, south of France etc in the pursuit of sunshine. Heaven forbid they come back without some colour. There is an area in Essex, which I will not name in case I offend, but every single lady and even the guys are orange with fake tan.

This is one of the reasons that I would really feel awkward putting an umbrella up in London. No one seeems to get that even a person of colour should be protecting themselves from the sun. It seems that there is generally more thought to protecting your skin from the aging effect of the sun but less for the tanning effect.

ya thats true...my cousins in the UK and Canada who are naturally lightskinned are constantly trying to tan! what I cant stand are light skinned people who have a problem with darker skinned people who dont want to tan!

why should they find that odd if I put up an umbrella! when a light skinned person tans and a dark skinned person tans the resutls are completely different! by societies standards and laws of beauty lighter skinned people look great with a tan! where as darker skinned people are thought to look, uneven, yucky, and downright unattractive!

I have to agree that for some darker tones tanning seems to give an ashy tone and somehow the skin seems to loose it's radiance. It may not have the same glow that someone of a lighter complexion may see when they tan. I guess those lighter skinned individuals, who have a problem with darker tones not wanting to tan, possibly have the same mentality of some causcasians who believe that darker skin should have absolutely no problems in the sun as they already have some built in protection.

But I think people need to wise up to the fact that regardless of whether you choose not to tan, be it in order to maintain or lighten your complexion, we all need some sort of protection. There will come a day when those of us sensible enough to adopt this practice will be grateful that we do as we enjoy the anti aging benefits of it. To h*ll with anyone who doesn't get it, I say !!! I am already reaping the rewards, as today I was refused being able to purchase alcohol for my adopted nanny, as they did not consider me old enough !!! hehehehehehe ........if only they knew. As much as I was miffed, I enjoyed the compliment. Thanks Retin A, vit C, my sun visor and my sun protection !!!

I am afraid like maharan mentioned you would get the strangest looks. Only people from China, Thailand etc can get away with that one. Thank God my sunscreen seems to have been holding up in the hot weather. It is cooling off as well so conditions are improving and it is less stressful being out. I hate the thought that I may be getting darker Mad
