Yes!! Mental or psychological stress can cause hair shedding or loss. Mental stress actually translates to physical changes in your body, when your under going a great deal of hardship or anxiety. Your body pumps out (cortisol), which affect your (thyriod) and adrenal hormones.

Really? I'll have to figure out ways to stop getting stressed out so quickly I guess. I heard of thyroid but what is cortisol?

Cortisol is a type of hormone called a corticosteriod produce by the body, people produce greater levels of it under significant stress especially during a fight etc. The adrenal gland, which is responsible for producing cortisol , does create it at varied levels through out the day. You will tend to have the most available cortisol in the morning and it wanes as the day progress. Also during stressfulll times cortisol is secreted and it tends to increase the desire for fatty foods. On top of that with the help of cortisol the fat is directed primarily to wards the midsection.

yes stress can. Many people seem to forget that the brain is responsible for everything and when it isn't working right the rest of your body doesn't. Anxiety can really do a number on you and it is important to get therapy. Going to your regular doctor will only result in getting a prescription for pills which is NOT a cure.
You must see a therapist in order to find out what is causing the strees and/or anxiety. The problem is people see a pill as an easy solution and a wayt to not have to deal with your problems. Depression is a perfect example of this. If it lasts longer then six months you may suffer from clinical depression and should see a dactor who will give you "happy" pills but that is only to take while going to therapy.

Three types of hair loss that can be associated with high stress levels are:

Alopecia areata. A variety of factors are thought to cause alopecia areata, possibly including severe stress. With alopecia areata, white blood cells attack the hair follicle, stopping hair growth and making hair fall out.

Telogen effluvium. In this condition, emotional or physical stress pushes large numbers of growing hairs into a resting phase. Within a few months, the affected hairs may fall out suddenly when simply combing or washing your hair.

Trichotillomania. Trichotillomania (trik-oh-til-oh-MAY-nee-uh) is an irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp, eyebrows or other areas of your body. Hair pulling can be a way of dealing with negative or uncomfortable feelings, such as stress, anxiety, tension, loneliness, fatigue or frustration.

Stress and hair loss don't have to be permanent. If you get your stress under control, your hair may grow back. Be sure to talk to your doctor if you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than usual hair loss when combing or washing your hair. Sudden hair loss can signal an underlying medical condition that requires treatment. If needed, your doctor may suggest treatment options for the hair loss as well. And if efforts to manage your stress on your own don't work, talk to your doctor about stress management techniques.

Thank you for that information, stalina. I just noticed recently that I've got less falling hair so I'm less worried now about my hair problems. I also changed shampoo so maybe that's another technique.

Yes, aside from graying hair, stress also results hair fall. So as much as possible never stressed out yourself. If hair fall still persist, use castor oil, apply it on your hair, leave it overnight and wash your hair in the morning as you normally do. Do this 2-3 times a week. As early as 3 weeks you can see improvement on your hair condition.

Indeed, stress can cause hair problems, not only hair problems but also another health problems, we can say stress is only a starting illness that can lead to another illness or disease. Though there are many things we can do in order to fight and deal stress, we just need to be strong, and learn to know deeply our self. Regarding with hair loss, we can apply some hair products but what we need to do first is to consult a health or hair expert for us to be sure what we do is safe.

Everyone has to live with some about of stress in their life, it is a fact of life and some of it can benefit us while other forms of stress can be detrimental to individuals both mentally and physically. Telogen Effluvium is one of the effects that can result from extreme stress, basically this is a thinning of a persons hair due to stress. Stress and hair loss don't necessary cause the other to occur. Stress doesn't have a direct result on a persons hair loss.

First and foremost we will have to look at alcohol and cigarettes, when people tend to feel the pressures of the world coming towards them; they usually turn to the solution of tobacco or alcohol. Although it may feel that these substances are helping you get through the situation, it is not the answer. They have more chance of harming you, especially if used over a long period of time, and they are the number one hair loss cause.
