I have received my hq and retin A from all day and want to know how much do you guys use of the retin A. I have been reading that you should not overdo it but I have not got a clue as to the correct amount and there are no instructions. I also still have some nadinola left over from the last time I tried it and want to know is it worth using this with the retin A before opening a new packet of the hq from all day. Thank you

you only need a pea sized amount of retin for an area like the face and maybe another for the neck so you get that you only really need a little amount. Too much and you risk causing too much peeling and then possibly irritating your skin and then getting maybe darker than you were in the first place. As for the nadinola I would say go for it. No sense wasting it. So long as it has not expired and has not oxidised (gone brown) then start off with it for now. The only thing is that it only has 3% I believe but some people really like nadinola anyway in preference to generic hq 4%

I agree with rainbow. Only thing I would add is that you should try it on an inconspicuous area to test how your skin reacts to it.Some people find RA difficult to tolerate. Also only apply it once every 3 nights and slowly buld up to nightly with time. Some people find that only using it every couple of nights or so still reaps the benefits if that is all that your skin can handle. Any time your skin feels sore or looks over exfoliated or red, then it is time to reduce the usage

I wish I had read your replies before.I have some sore areas around my nose and the corners of my mouth and I think I may have been using too much and too many times. So should I just stop using it there for now? Is there anything I can use to make it feel less sore?

Yes definitley. You have mentioned areas that can be very sensitive to retin A. Just be cautious when you go back to it not to put too much on and apply very very sparyingly.

So no retin A for now until the skin is completely healed and not sore. You can use a bland cream on it like aveeno, eucerin or e45 or even vaseline at night. If the skin looks or feels very sore, a fast healing ointment should help. Remember in future you do not need to be able to see the retin A on your skin for it to be working. Only a small amount is needed as it is strong

Be prepared for the peeling skin as well. I have just had another episode and it is so annoying when I need to put on my make up. It may not be an issue for you if you don't wear make up

skin seems to have healed a bit and is less tender now. I generally do not wear make up so it shouldn't be too much trouble then right? I was applying cocoa and shea butter and it looks like it has helped. I can see where the skin looks like it is peeling and want to know what you do to make it go

They say that the best thing to do is leave it well alone and allow it to peel by itself naturally. It is the one aspect of retin a that I cannot tolerate as wearing make up only highlights the peeling even more. I think they say that after a while the peeling does lessen but I have not been able to reach that stage lol. If it gets really bad or you cannot let it peel naturally then you can try using a facial microfibre cloth and very very very gently wisp them away. I am stressing this point as if you remove any skin before it is ready to peel there is the possibility of causing hyperpigmentaion and therefore darkening.

The only way I have been able to deal with it myself is to only use retin a maybe twice a week. It may mean that I am going to take longer to get where I want to be but better that than the embarassment of people asking me why my skin is so dry and flaky. Actually you could try moisturisng during the day to help combat some of the dryness as make up is not an issue for you

Thanks. What is a microfibre cloth then? I do see that when I really moisturise then it does not look as bad. I just don't always get the time though as I try not to do it straight after I apply my nadinola in case it lessens the lightening effect and then sometimes I forget

Those cloths look a bit like a flannel but are suppoised to be far more gentle on the skin. You can buy them on the internet or I have seen them in my 99p stores as well before. The idea is that it will gently slough away the dead skin without causing too much irritation as long as you use it with care

This is normal and is part of the purging stage. Retin A exfoliates the impurities deep within the skin and this is manifesting itself as the breakout you are experiencing. To be honest this is often when many give up and stop using retin A but bear with it and it will pass. It is one of the downsides but is worth it when you come through it to clearer skin

This is absolutely right. I had that horrible phase too and thought OMG I am trying to get rid of the spots from makari not make new ones!! Thankfully I got great advice on here and continued and it did stop. My only issue is the peeling but the benefits do make up for it. My skin has never been clearer!!

Not to mention the anti aging benefits of retin A. It is an all round great product and the prices that you can get it at mean you cannot go wrong

Don't worry it will eventually lessen and then you can start to see how good it is.

This has been very informative. Last year i used 2% hq cream to clear up pigmentation issues and it did that and more. My face was smoother brighter and even toned. I even stopped using foundation at some point (and that says alot). However i got burnt and i even had blisters! It began when patches of my skin started lightening faster than the rest of my face. I should have stopped but i didnt. I had to discontinue it. 8 months later and although am completely healed my burn scars are still slightly visible as well as my pigmentation issues and to make matters worse i spent my christmas holiday at my grandmas in Somalia! I came back darker than the night and am yet to recover. Even my toes dont look the same. I also had a breakout (just my luck). So i look like the living dead. I purchased 0.025 Retin A cream and sunscreen and i would like to give it a try. Am going to take it slow and see how it goes. After reading this thread i am now optimistic and more knowledgeable. Am hoping you would keep us updated. Thanx.

Hi Desiree, sorry to hear about your problem. I take it that you were not using sunblock then? Good to hear that you will be using it in the future. It helps to avoid so many problems especially as you have used HQ. The best ones to try contain zinc and/or titanium. The one that I know sinks in completely is the devita otherwise they do tend to leave a slight white caste. Covering up and wearing hats if you can also helps. Is it ok to use an umbrella where you are? I know I can't do it here in the UK though I have seen some individuals who have done it. I just can't bear the stares. The UK tends to be more about sun worshipping rather than avoidance. Are you planning on going back to hq then at some point in the future? Anyway best of luck and let us know how it works out for you

Thanx Kim! I wasnt using any sunscreen up until recently. I guess i have the sun to blame for all my skin problems. When i was much younger i had gorgeous flawless skin and i was much lighter. I hope now that am using sunscreen it would help reverse some of the sun damage. I've heard also that the RA also helps with sundamage as well as lighten pigmentations. I bought a sunblock SPF 50 with zinc and titanium and it was heavy. My skin didnt absorb it and it was visibly white. And it was d**n expensive. Am now looking for the perfect sunscreen before i start on any lightening cream. Thanx for the link i'll try and see if i can find any of those products locally especially devita (i want a sunblock that completely sinks in). I loved the HQ it was the only thing that seemed to work for me but right now am a bit apprehensive maybe in the future. I did use the remaining HQ on my feet for a month but it didnt do anything at all so am taking a break. Here if you are spotted with an umbrella and its not raining you are definitely going to get stares. And am naturally shy so the attention would be too much for me i would rather stay away from the sun and use sunblock.

It's a shame that people are not more sun aware because then maybe there would not be such a big deal about using a parasol/umbrella. Even in the UK skin cancer is growing and growing and people are still not getting the picture and realising they need to do something about it and be protecting themselves more. I totally undersand why you would be uncomfortable holding an umbrella when no one else is. I don't like drawing attention to myself either and I also tend to find that people are quick to comment to me. I have one of those faces where people find it easy to give their unwanted opinions sadly.

Shame about the sunblock leaving the white marks. Maybe finish using it on exposed parts of your body and try rubbing it in using the heel of your palm gently. For me the best sunblocks I have found have been those I have purchased on line. Locally they tend to be the chemical sunscreens which breakdown very easily and therefore need more frequent applications OR they are very visible physical blocks that make me either look ghostly or blue lol

Desiree you can try burnout clean and clear. It leaves no caste on me

I agree it should not be such a big thing to protect your face with an umbrella. They used to do it in the past but now the swing is for tanned skin

Like I say we are all different so it is difficult to say when you will see any difference. I would say at least several weeks should be needed because in general skin turns over every 28 days, though retin A may speed up this time. If you are tolerating it well you may find that you can increase the frequency of your retin A application. Do remember that slow and steady always wins the race and some people have real
problems when they go too quickly.

Just keep the updates coming and I am sure you will be posting how well your skin is coming along in no time Smile

I am sure it took me a couple of months before I noticed anything different with retin A. I did not find it to be a quick process at all. I think it has helped clear my pores and the blackheads I had
